I’m happy to share that my article, “Beyond the Design Screen: How Experience Shapes the Modern Creative Professional,” was published in RAW Arabia’s Public Column on October 27, 2026.
In the article, I reflect on my journey as a Filipino graphic designer and Head of Creative in Dubai, and on how working across different parts of the creative industry has changed the way I understand design.
Why Design Is More Than What We See
Design is often judged by the finished image, logo, packaging or website. But behind the visual result are decisions about communication, function, production and the objective it needs to achieve.
My experience in digital printing and production taught me to consider how an idea becomes a physical product. Later, working in hospitality and creative agencies helped me understand how branding, campaigns and digital experiences connect with people and support business goals.
From Self-Learning to Creative Direction
I originally studied Computer Programming in the Philippines and developed my design skills through practice, online tutorials and hands-on experience. When I arrived in Dubai in 2017, I was still building my portfolio and finding my direction in the industry.
Over time, I moved from graphic design into print production, marketing visuals, branding, packaging, UI/UX design and creative direction. Today, as a Head of Creative, I look at how individual creative decisions contribute to the bigger picture, not just how a design looks on screen.
Keep Learning, But Remember the Purpose
Creative tools and technology continue to evolve, including artificial intelligence. I enjoy learning and exploring new possibilities, but I believe the thinking behind the work matters more than the software used to make it.
My hope is that this article offers something useful to designers and creative professionals, especially those building their careers through self-learning, changing roles and practical experience.
